Salary levy delayed in Grenada

Tuesday the Grenada government announced that it has agreed to delay the implementation of the five per cent levy on the salaries of workers as part of the efforts to fund rehabilitation work following the devastation caused by two hurricanes during a 10 month period.

But the Keith Mitchell administration made it clear that the "levy has to be introduced in time for the 2006 Budget".In a statement issued after a Cabinet meeting Tuesday, Prime Minister Mitchell said he would support a measure which would include the Grenada Employers Federation and the Grenada Conference of Churches in talks concerning the introduction of the five per cent levy.

The move by the Mitchell administration came as the Trade Union Congress’s (TUC) deadline for postponing massive protests in the country, expired on Tuesday. The TUC has called on the government to withdraw the decision to impose the five per cent levy and gave the government until Tuesday to indicate whether it would delay the implementation of the levy.
