Cuban Aid to Caribbean Unity Acclaimed

Havana, Jan 5 (Prensa Latina) Association of Caribbean States general secretary, Ruben Silie, acknowledged Cuba´s ability on Thursday in designing and coordinating ministerial tasks of that regional entity and its importance for Caribbean integration.

The ACS leader is on an official visit to Cuba at the invitation of Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque, with whom he had a working visit, as well as with other ministers and Vice President Carlos Lage.

Following a tour of the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM), Silie said he was impressed and satisfied that "every one of the entities we have visited demonstrate the Cuban government´s coherent work with respect to Caribbean integration."

Silie was received by ELAM Dean Juan Domingo Carrizo who explained the characteristics and results of the med school´s 10,000 students from 28 countries, who are trained in ethics and social commitment as well as solid academics.

The sub-regional leader was visibly impressed with the school begun at the initiative of President Fidel Castro in 1998 after the devastation of Central America by Hurricane Mitch and congratulated the Revolution for its work in bettering the quality of life of other peoples, not only Cubans.

Silie´s visit to ELAM was one of his last official acts in his stay on the Island, which he evaluated as highly positive.
