Cuba and the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) are entering a new era in the integration process, noted ACS Secretary General Ruben Silie Valdez during a meeting with Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque in Havana on Tuesday.
On the first day of his official visit to Cuba, Silie underscored the importance of Cuban assistance in making the dream of integration a reality. He noted that in that process the particular characteristics of each ACS nation are taken into account because there are a large number of member countries with small, vulnerable economies.
The ACS official recalled that in the last summit of the organization held in Panama, the political leaders of the region expressed their desire for the organization to have a greater social impact. Silie said that the ACS Secretariat will do everything needed in the technical side, and voiced confidence that his visit to Cuba will strengthen the effort.
The Cuban foreign minister underlined the island’s willingness to cooperate in implementing the accords reached in Panama. He added that this is a moment in history when strong winds are blowing in Latin America and the Caribbean in favor of integration and to face the complex adversity of an unjust and unequal world.
Perez Roque emphasized the important role of the ACS in that context. He recalled, “We have committed ourselves to the organization’s founding principles and to its objectives, and we hope this visit will allow us to explore ways for Cuba to increase its contribution to the work of ACS Secretariat and in the fulfillment of the organization’s main working guidelines.”
