ST JOHN’S, Antigua: Relations between Antigua and Barbuda and Cuba were further strengthened on Tuesday morning when Health Minister John Maginley met a number of Cuban eye specialists to discuss the continuation of the eye care programme.
The programme, which was developed by the Cuban government following discussions with regional heads of government including Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, provides free eye examination and free medical treatment in Cuba.
According to Minister Maginley, the eye specialists will be making arrangement to have an optometrist visit Antigua and Barbuda on a regular basis to examine those patients that actually went to Cuba.
He noted that the optometrist will determine if any of the patients need spectacles or eyeglasses which will be free of charge. The optometrist will also be visiting Barbuda to assist patients who are suffering from any eye disease.
The boosting of the health care system in Antigua and Barbuda with the addition of specialized nurses and other health care professionals was also discussed.
Health Minister further outlined that the Cuban government will give permission for several health care professionals from Antigua and Barbuda to travel to Cuba later this year to broaden their skills.
The Minister also said that the Cuban government is planning on establishing a diagnostic centre in Antigua and Barbuda, fully staffed by Cuban medical personnel, in order to provide referral specialist eye-care treatment to nationals.
The centre which will be located on the southern part of the island is expected to be a state of the art structure.
The Cuban delegation comprises of Cuban Coordinator Professor Dr Pedro Alfonso Aguilar, Special Advisor to the Ministry of Europe Ms C David Paulovich Escalona and Ministry of Public Health for International Relationship Dr Ricardo Bagarotti.
