SC to Analyze Elections Delay in Haiti

United Nations, Jan 5 (Prensa Latina) UN officials expressed reservations Thursday about the alleged causes forcing another postponement of Haitian general elections and Friday will analyze exactly what is happening there.

The urgent Security Council meeting has been called to evaluate what caused the Provisional Electoral Council in Haiti to put off the January 8 elections.
The PEC announced the delay on December 30 and stated the UN and Organization of American States were at fault for delaying distribution of voting paper and not preparing election centers.

However, UN officials involved in the UN Stabilizing Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) rejected those accusations and insisted its task was "to verify the real existence of those centers."
The analysis involving the 15 members of the Security Council was requested by Argentina, a provider of MINUSTAH troops, along with Chile, Brazil and Uruguay.

"The members of the Council would like to know what exactly happened and particularly the circumstances that forced postponement of elections," said Ambassador from Tanzania Augustine Mahiga, who is this month´s president of the Security Council.

The elections scheduled for January 8 would have been the first since constitutional President Jean Bertrand Aristide was forced to leave the country in February 2004.
