Eye Surgery Expanding in Las Tunas, Cuba

Las Tunas, Cuba, Jan 3, (P26).- An increasing number of eye operations for cataracts and glaucoma have been performed in eastern Las Tunas province over the past few years as part to a nationwide effort to improve ophthalmology services.

Speaking with Periodico 26 Online, Dr. Regina Perez Betancourt, head of that medical service at the Dr. Ernesto Guevara Hospital, said that 95 percent of the patients do not require hospitalization and the results have proved most effective.

She also pointed out that modern surgical techniques have been introduced and children's eye surgery has also advanced.

Now, ophthalmologists from Las Tunas are taking part in Operation Miracle —an initiative to operate on hundreds of thousands of poorer Latin American and Caribbean people who are suffering from numerous eye diseases, free of charge.
