BRIDGETOWN (BGIS) - The local Education Evaluation Centre ‘has a critical role to play in the development of this country’s educational programmes, and will have the full support of Government as it carries out its mandate to provide advisory and consultancy services in that area.’

This assurance was given by the newly appointed Minister of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, Anthony Wood, recently during his maiden speech at an Open House and Gallery Walk, organised by the Centre at its University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus location.

Explaining that the Centre was developed in part to assist in the effective implementation of the Education Sector Enhancement Programme (EDUTECH), Minister Wood said that the success of the programme hinged on the work of that institution. "One of the key tasks the Centre is expected to perform is the monitoring and evaluation of the programmes that are an integral part of EDUTECH," he noted, adding that his Ministry was depending on the information collected to "fill in any gaps in its data collection exercises to guide planning".

Principal of the Cave Hill Campus, Hillary Beckles also pledged his commitment to the Evaluation Centre, which he deemed significant to the continuation of the educational process here. He opined that Barbados and other countries in the sub region would do well if they continued to develop programmes to "highly educate" their respective populations.

The Education Evaluation Centre is also mandated to host public lectures and workshops in collaboration with the Erdiston Teacher’s Training College; present research at local, national and international conferences; and dialogue with Ministries of Education in the Caribbean.
