Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas has assured citizens that immediate action will be taken to increase public security and safety for the upcoming Carnival celebrations.
This was one of the initiatives arrived at following a joint meeting between Dr. Douglas and representatives from nine non-governmental organisations – St. Kitts-Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the St. Christopher Heritage Society, St. Kitts Evangelical Association, St. Kitts Christian Council, St. Kitts Teachers’ Union, Rotary Club of St. Kitts, Rotary Club of Liamuiga, St. Kitts-Nevis Hotel and Tourism Association and St. Kitts-Nevis Bar Association.
According to a joint statement issued by the government, the prime minister outlined decisions taken by government to address the recent spate of violent crimes and measures to strengthen the crime-fighting capabilities of the police force.
“There was very frank exchange of views on the subject of crime and its causes and several proposals were put forward by the non-governmental organisations towards long and short term solutions to the problem.
“The parties agreed on the importance of a unified national approach to this issue and the need to send the strongest possible message that criminal activity of any kind will not be tolerated,” the communiqué informed.
The prime minister ended the meeting with an assurance that the government will not allow fear of crime to prevent the citizens and residents of the Federation from going about their normal business at this festive time of the year.
“He gave the assurance that government will continue to work on this situation and, if necessary, will call in whatever external assistance is required,” the statement said.
The joint meeting came in the wake of Monday morning’s brutal slaying of owner of Why Not Bar and Restaurant, Lorenzo Greene and his wife, Michelle, who were attacked in their home at Lime Kiln.
The prime minister was accompanied by Minister of National Security Dwyer Astaphan; the Attorney-General Delano Bart; Chief Secretary Joseph Edmeade; Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security Astona Browne and Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Erasmus Williams.
Dr. Douglas will also highlight the crime situation today during his address at the St. Kitts/Nevis Defence Force annual Christmas luncheon.
