Basseterre, St. Kitts (June 23, 2006): Resident Cuban Ambassador Anna Maria Gonzales says she is pleased with the number of persons who have shown interest in the Cuban Scholarships for the nursing programme.
She said however that she wants to ensure that young people from all low income families who qualify for the scholarship are made aware of the opportunity.
Ambassador Gonzales explained that the application process is a simple one which can be done easily after the form is collected from the human resources department at Government Headquarters.
The ambassador clarified that the nurses will not be trained solely to work as AIDS patient care specialists as some person had asked but that they would be trained in basic nursing and receive an associates degree upon completion.
She added that they will be given training to work with AIDS patients which is a necessary skill and one that each nursing student must possess in these modern times.
The ambassador said the students will also have the added advantage of learning the Spanish language. Sixty successful candidates will leave for Cuba on July 20.
