Home affairs receives donation from Republic of China
By Government of Belize Press

OfficePosted: Dec 22, 2005 15:57 UTCBELMOPAN - Minister of Home Affairs and Public Utilities Honourable Ralph Fonseca today received a donation from the Ambassador of the Republic of China, His Excellency Charles Tsai.

This assistance is the final disbursement to Belize for the project to develop a Central American Network Information System for the location and recovery of stolen vehicles (RECSI).

The donation valued at BZ$126,488 was a direct result of the 9th and 10th Conferences between the regional foreign ministers and the Republic of China. An earlier amount of Bz$378,743 was received in May of last year.

In a parallel development the Police Information Technology Unit has completed installation of several servers to support the search engine MEMEX, the Automatic Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and intra-mail services.

The RECSI system will also shortly come on stream. The communication system, currently being installed, to link these systems will form the basis of a powerful crime fighting wide area network accessible by all major police headquarters and the sub formations or any officer with a radio or telephone.

This network will give investigators instantaneous access countrywide. The powerful search engine MEMEX mimics human intelligence by associating suspects with crime and crime patterns including outstanding warrants.

AFIS installed since 2002, is able to search the growing national fingerprint database and make matches in less than one minute.
