Call for submissions:
The next Caribbean Women's Conference which will be held in Martinique in May 2006, will highlight the process of gender dynamics in local economies and entrepreneurship, with a special emphasis on "petits métiers" (small jobs). Therefore, we are trying to gather visual materials, interviews, short documentaries to provide visual backgrounds in support of the workshop. To this end, and following a screening process, the author of the best document submitted will be invited to the conference as a panelist (all expenses paid by the organizers : Délégation Régionale aux Droits des Femmes et à l'Egalité de la Martinique ), and will receive a cash prize of TWO THOUSAND Euros (€ 2 000).
Other relevant materials might still be retained for viewing during the conference.
Submission deadline for authors is January 15th, 2006, and the format: Mini DV or DVC Pro.
Thematic Area:
Women, Social Capital and individual Creativity as Alternative Means to Strengthen Entrepreneurship at local level
In the Caribbean, the process guiding governance and institutional arrangements has been carried out under different outlooks, in terms of administrative and political frameworks. As a result, whereas in the most "privileged" islands, i.e., non-independent territories, in most cases, women can relay on government subsidies as providers of basic needs, on the other hand, the context underneath the management of public expenditures and provisions of basic needs for women in other independent nations has fostered a culture of entrepreneurship under which women can only relay on themselves through a process of asset creations embedded with individual creativity / ingenuity. As a matter of fact, these examples abound in the Caribbean culture with such lively characters as the peanuts' vendors, ice-cream makers, hair braiders, and the likes.
